Water
Did you know that whilst a cappucino or latte from our favourite coffee shop can cost almost £3 and take perhaps 10minutes to drink, it costs just £1 to provide clean and safe water for 180 families (not people) in an African slum for 1 day. Comic Relief gets money to where it really makes a difference, including providing essential water – a resource we take forgranted. If you can help them donate at www.rednoseday.com
In our modern world we’re all used to the convenience of running a tap to get the water we need for a cup of tea, to cook our vegetables and pasta in, to wash our hair, to shower or to water the garden. We take it for granted that this water is always there, it’s always clean and it isn’t going to make us sick or kill us.
Nearly 1 billion people do not have access to clean water – the very source of life – and almost 2.5billion people (40% of the world’s population) don’t have access to a clean toilet. Water bourne diseases kill 4000 children every day. Most of these diseases are preventable.
Women and children spend hours every day walking miles to get clean water. Certainly for the children, their time could be better spent getting an education.
There are several water charities, but my favourites are:
Water Aid – Provides safe water and sanitation as well as education about hygiene, to the poorest in the world.
They also look for ways to influence national and international policies.

One Water - They build playpumps around Africa which look a bit like
roundabouts we see in playgrounds.
The idea is that as children play, clean water is pumped and then stored for later use. Funds are raised through donations and us buying bottled ‘One Water’.
We all like our bottled water and if we choose this brand, every penny of the profits go directly into getting safe water to those who really need it. They’ve already funded 513 pumps!
